Accessibility Requirements
Accessibility laws and policies affecting Federal government agencies include:
- Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act - as amended in 1998 and enforced starting in 2001, Section 508 requires that all IT systems used, developed, procured, and maintained by the Federal government be accessible to people with disabilities.
- Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) - the equal access requirement of the ADA requires IT system accessibility. Just as physical office locations must provide equal access for people with disabilities through ramps and elevators, similar accessibility enhancements are required for IT systems.
- Other Requirements - Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and Section 255 of the Telecommunications Act.
